Dear Pam and Elmer,
I am so saddened to hear about your health, Elmer. You have been a constant throughout my life, and you mean so much to me, our family, and so many others.
My earliest memories of you are as someone my father would always be really excited and happy to see. As a child, I remember being fascinated by you - how someone so big and strong with such a powerful voice could be so gentle. You have always been able to relate to children so beautifully.
Going to your house in Berkeley was always a treat. Your gardens were a wonderland, and no trip was complete without a walk to the park with the big rocks. And your cooking! Always with love, always delish.
One of my fondest memories is of the family sitting in a big circle in your living room, giggling, oooing and ahhhing, watching your four baby granddaughters crawling around and interacting. You were beaming as you looked at them. It was so beautiful.
I’m so grateful I was invited to join you for your big anniversary celebration, where you were surrounded by your family and dear friends. There was love overflowing for the two of you in that room. I can’t remember how many speeches made me cry! Probably all of them.
Elmer, you have always been a role model to me. The way you and Pam have lived your lives, always giving to others and caring for others, is an inspiration. And for so many of us! Generations of us who have entered your realm are better for it today.
I love you both, and I am sending big strong Elmer-type hugs to you both.
Love,
Susie
