Dear Elmer,
There are so many memories, but one that stands out is the day after our younger son Nathan was born. We didn't allow many visitors in, but you and Pam came over to meet the baby and to bring dinner. You had the good sense not to stay long, even though we invited you to stay for the meal you prepared. I remember the dinner to this day...a moist whole chicken with mushrooms, carrots, potatoes and onions (Roast Chicken, pg. 79 in the Pam and Elmer Family Cookbook). You peered over the bassinet, looked at Nathan with his big Frankel head and said "that must have hurt".
During our many dinners, some at your house, some at ours, I often wanted you to provide me with the wisdom of your years. You were too wise do so, saying that you had no particular pearls to pass along. But you have passed along so much wisdom by example. What a life you have had! It has been filled with meaningful work, service to community, family and friends, food and travel, love and laughter. I will miss you so much. Love, Sharon
