Dear Elmer, I especially admire the shot of you on this website savoring an oyster, as well as the one of you doing important things on the grill, both of which put me in mind of a scrumptious meal at your place and the Grossman Family Cookbook. Delicious emblems of the fact that you've always known what matters. Love, Carl

Following is a copy of the email I sent to Pam a few days ago, which also tells about some of the other reasons I have always admired you.

Dear Pam,
I'm dismayed to hear about Elmer, as is Jackie. Dismayed both for him and for you. Such a generous, caring, wise, and widely gifted person that I've always admired him from the first time we met, and cherish the few times we've been together. A lovable man indeed, as you need not be told, but I say so as a way of trying to convey what I cannot adequately convey about the magnitude of your loss, and my grief for both of you. Please send him my love and a "hail and farewell."
Love, Carl
